Brief Biography of Big Zulu
Big Zulu, born Siyabonga Nene on 7 April 1986 in Bergville, KwaZulu Natal, grew up inspired by traditional Maskandi and Isichathamiya music. Influences such as Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Phuzekemisi, and Imithente shaped his musical identity. Before entering the music industry, he worked as a taxi driver and later discovered his talent for rap and poetic storytelling.
His rise began in 2013 after winning the Back to the City rap contest. The breakthrough came in 2016 with the hit single Donsa Nkabi, followed by a signing with Universal Music in 2015. His debut album Ushun Wenkabi (2018) and the follow up Ungqongqoshe Wongqongqoshe (2019) produced hits like Ak’laleki and Ama Million. In 2021, his album Ichwane Lenyoka dominated charts with smash singles like Mali Eningi, which achieved double platinum certification.
Beyond music, Big Zulu has appeared in TV shows including Isibaya, One Mic, and Uzalo. In 2019, he founded Inkabi Records, signing artists like Mduduzi Ncube and Lwah Ndlunkulu, and he continues to shape the SA music landscape.
